Not much out this week. The new releases on DVD and Blu are: Bad Grandpa, Inescapable, We Are What We Are

Bad Grandpa

What it is: A new spin on the Jackass franchise, Johnny Knoxville stars as Bad Grandpa (previously seen in the films and TV shows of Jackass) – setting up gags staged around being old. The humour wears off pretty quickly and if you’ve seen the skit in the other shows there is nothing really new here. However if you find Bad Grandpa is your favorite character then you’re in luck because this is nothing but! The make up – nominated for an Oscar – is impressive

What We Say: Nothing new. Not the best film – although ironically could actually win an oscar!

Buy it because: You love Jackass and Bad Grandpa is your favourite character.

inescapable

Inescapable

What it is: Years after he left Damascus , Adib Abdel Kareem must confront his past when his daughter disappears.

What we say: An unheard of action film – and it’s not a great loss that this didn’t get seen more. It’s okay but only just. It’s an interesting blend of drama, thriller and action – and it tries to be something more… it just hasn’t quite got that special something. Nice try tho.

Buy it because: You like watching obscure films that most will miss. The actors all do a fair job and it’s worth keeping an eye our for those involved as it does offer some promise – and you can say you were there at the beginning.

we are what we are

We Are What We Are

What it is: The Parkers find their secret existence threatened as a a heavy downpour moves into their area, forcing daughters Iris and Rose to assume responsibilities beyond those of a typical family. Remake of the cult 2010 film about a family of cannibals. It isn’t as good as that but as a remake it’s above average. Keeping to the same story and horror as the original this does offer up a great 90 minutes and on a quiet week is deserving of our film of the week as we love a good horror.

What we say: Dark, funny, scary, gory. Ticks a lot of the boxes we like in a horror. Well worth checking out.

Buy it because: If you liked the original this holds it’s own and is a nice extension to it. If you didn’t see the original but are put of by subtitles then this a good alternative. Or you’re simply a horror fan – you’re going to get your moneys worth either way!

New Movies – DVD and Blu-Ray – 17th Feb 2014

The four big titles coming out this week are: Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, Closed Circuit, Machete Kills and The Fifth Estate.

cloudy 2

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2

What it is: Flint Lockwood now works at The Live Corp Company for his idol Chester V. But he’s forced to leave his post when he learns that his most infamous machine is still operational and is churning out menacing food-animal hybrids.

What we say: The sequel to 2009’s hit animation, sees more anarchic happenings. While not as spot-on as the Pixar films or as cute as Despicable Me 2, it does offer humour for all the family.

Buy it because: a great family film, quick easy viewing, the kids will want to watch it over and over!

closedcircuit

Closed Circuit

What it is: A high-profile terrorism case unexpectedly binds together two ex-lovers on the defence team – testing the limits of their loyalties and placing their lives in jeopardy.

What We Say: Tense, paranoid thriller. Not as good as 3 Days of the Condor or the Parallax View but if you want a modern, fast paced thriller – and set in England – then this is well worth a view.

Buy it because: It’s tense, exciting, great case AND you’ll want to see it a couple of times to take everything in!

fifthestate

The Fifth Estate

What is it: A dramatic thriller based on real events that reveals the quest to expose the deceptions and corruptions of power that turned an Internet upstart into the 21st century’s most fiercely debated organisation.

What We Say: Based on the real life founding of WikiLeaks – this biopic works as an exciting thriller. It would work well with the above film, Closed Circuit, in the paranoia stakes. Allthough this is true – and is therefore quite eye opening at times. Benedict Cumberbatch is excellent as Julian Assange.

Buy it because: MOVIE OF THE WEEK! It was an unheralded film from last year that will gain respect as time moves on. The performances are excellent. It’s true and that adds to the tension and excitement as you watch it.

machetekills

Machete Kills

What is it: The U.S. government recruits Machete to battle his way through Mexico in order to take down an arms dealer who looks to launch a weapon into space.

What we say: Crazy, Fun, Mental! This action-packed (in the truest sense!) sequel to Machete (2010) is everything you want – if you liked the first! Which we did! Machete battles evil mastermind Mel Gibson – and a huge cast of gun toting manics including Lady Gaga!

Buy it because: It’s totally rewatchable. It’s really fun aaand you’ll want to see all the famous faces battling it out time and again!
